This famous Renaissance painting is by Raphael and it depicts the Lord Jesus Christ falling with the cross on his back on his way to Calvary. It is an emotional subject as it occurs right before his Crucifixion. As he falls, his mother Mary watches and is stricken with agony at the sight of her son suffering. The man who momentarily helps lift the cross is Simon of Cyrene, a Jew. This is one of the most iconic paintings of all time.
